Mr. Ould-Abdallah is the president of the Center for Strategy and Security in the Sahel Sahara (Centre4s). Previously, Mr. Ould-Abdallah was mediating in-residence for the Department of Political Affairs at the United Nations.Before that, he was Special Representative UN Secretary-General for Somalia.

From 2003-2007, Mr. Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah was jointly Special Representative of Secretary-General for West Africa and Chairman of the Nigeria Cameroon Mixed Commission. Beginning from 1996 to 2002 he served as Executive Secretary of the Global Coalition for Africa, a forum in Washington, DC-based intergovernmental dedicated to African issues.

From 1993 to 1995 he served as Special Representative of UN Secretary-General in Burundi. Prior to this assignment between 1985-1993, he worked as a consultant on energy, including renewable energy and African issues in the UN Secretary-General

From 1968 to 1985, Mr. Ould-Abdallah has held a number of senior positions in his native government (Mauritania), including the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation and the Minister of Trade and Transportation.He was also ambassador to the United States, the European Union and the Benelux countries (Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands). He also was Chief Executive Officer and member of the Board of SNIM, the largest mining company and the largest company in Mauritania.

Ould-Abdallah served on a number of advisory boards for public and private organizations, including the International Center for Ethics, Justice and Public Life of Brandeis University, the ICRC and Search for Common Ground.He is co-founder and advisory board member of Transparency International, an international non-governmental organization devoted to the fight against corruption.

Ould-Abdallah has written extensively on Africa, democracy, human rights and conflict management. He is the author of two books: Burundi on the Brink (U.S. Institute of Peace, 2000) and The Diplomacy Pyromaniac (Calmann Levy, 1997) in association with Stephen Smith.
